Ojibwe artist and Waldorf alum, Maggie Thompson, is expanding her knitwear business, Makwa Studio. She started with “two balls of yarn and a hat” and now uses vintage Brother knitting machines to make collaborative products for companies like Target.
The business’ expansion is made possible by an industrial knitting machine that works with finer yarn. Thompson (Fond du Lac Ojibwe) draws inspiration from her Ojibwe heritage, which can be seen in her work. She was also inspired by her time in Waldorf education saying she remembers her first knitting project: A flute case at her Waldorf school in fourth grade. Since then, her love for textiles has continued to grow.
