South Shore Waldorf School Seeking French Teacher 2024/25

The South Shore Waldorf School is seeking a French teacher for grades one through eight. The ideal candidate is fluent in French and has familiarity with Waldorf education and experience and/or training in grade school settings, with a background in Waldorf Teacher Training.

We are looking for someone who is hard-working, has a positive attitude, excellent communication skills, and possesses storytelling and singing skills. The perfect candidate works with purpose and enthusiasm and is looking to grow with our school and community.

OUR SCHOOL:

The South Shore Waldorf School, founded by a small but dedicated group of parents in 1996, is set on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada, in Blockhouse, close to the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Lunenburg and the charming small town of Mahone Bay, and is less than an hour south of the city of Halifax.

Our school resides in a century-old schoolhouse situated on six acres of woodland and meadow. Our school community life is strong and filled with festivals and community events.

The faculty work collaboratively with parents, administrative staff, and a committed board of directors to provide a beautiful Waldorf education to our students.  We are an AWSNA Developing School and a full member of WECAN.

Essential Job Duties

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach 8 lessons of French Language each week through until June 13th on the days and at the times arranged with the school faculty to fit in with the weekly timetable
  • Teach classes in accordance with Waldorf Curriculum and Pedagogy
  • Work with children ages 7-13 as the French Teacher for grades 1-8
  • Work with class teachers in preparation for and attend winter and closing concerts
  • Be available to meet parents by request for scheduled parent/teacher interviews
  • Maintain routine order and cleanliness in the classroom and keep attendance records
  • Give permission to colleagues and others to visit classrooms as required
  • Foster positive relationships with their colleagues, the children, and families
  • Teach by example
  • Maintain needed paperwork, including taking classroom daily attendance
  • Prepare comments for students for the end of year reports
  • Attend and participate in the Festival life of the school
  • Be involved in Outreach activities and School Open Houses
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings every Thursday from 3:30-5:30pm
  • Attend PD days and Teacher Conferences
  • Know and implement discipline policy as set in the ‘School Handbook’
  • Be committed to ongoing professional development

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ideal candidates will be fluent in French and have a Bachelor’s degree, Waldorf teacher training, and experience teaching a Waldorf grades program
  • We seek a teacher with strong organizational and classroom management skills who can create a warm, gentle, and structured environment for children and can teach with confidence 
  • Candidates should enjoy working as part of a team with teachers and parents in the day-to-day running of the school, a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development, and the willingness to enter whole-heartedly into the life of an alternative school community
  • As a Waldorf teacher, the candidate should feel comfortable in music and art and enjoy the outdoors
  • Candidates who have a serious interest in Waldorf education, are experienced educators, and have a willingness to attend teacher training will be considered
  • Hold current First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Be a Canadian citizen or hold a valid work permit or permanent residency status
  • Submit completed Vulnerable Sector and Child Abuse Registry checks upon being hired
  • Be able to follow Public Health guidelines

Employment Details

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is coverage for a long term leave of absence for the duration of this school year. The position is to teach French and assist with recess yard duty between the hours 11:00am-3:00pm Monday-Thursday, with the possibility of renewal the following school year. All new employees are subject to a 3 month probationary period. Salary is $18,000-$20,000 depending on qualifications and years of experience and is in the range of other Waldorf Schools in provinces that receive no government support.

Faculty receive partial tuition remission for all their children. Faculty members also receive a small health allowance and mentoring.
