Opening Statement

As a member of the faculty at Shining Mountain Waldorf School, the Choir Teacher is responsible for the vocal/choral education of students. Music is integral to the Waldorf curriculum, and the choir teacher works to introduce basic vocal and musical skills to young students and to develop these throughout the grades.

Shining Mountain Waldorf School (SMWS) is a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 independent school. We are an accredited member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) and the Association of Colorado Independent Schools (ACIS), as well as a member of the National Association for Independent Schools (NAIS).

Essential Job Duties

Job Responsibilities:

  • Choosing repertoire, planning lessons, and teaching middle school music classes and combined middle school choir.
  • 6 classes per week: 4th – 8th grades
  • Preparing students for performances at concerts, festivals and special events throughout the academic year.
  • Ordering music and maintaining a current database of all choral music in the school’s library (with Pedagogical Director oversight).
  • Attending weekly meetings of the music department and Thursday afternoon all employee Plenum meetings
  • Assisting class teachers with music pertinent to curriculum and class plays.
  • Monitoring students on recess duty.
  • Attending evening parent meetings a few times per year to present aspects of the music program.
  • Meeting with parents at yearly parent conferences.
  • Writing student midyear progress reports, end-of-year reports.

 

Qualifications

Skills:

  • Solid knowledge of vocal pedagogy and music theory.
  • Knowledge of repertoire suitable for developing and changed voices, both accompanied and a cappella.
  • Interest in developing a progressive Waldorf canon using a DEI lens
  • Exemplary classroom management and discipline.
  • Basic piano skills for vocalization exercises. (The school employs a choral accompanist.)
  • Ability to collaborate with music and other faculty on curriculum and performances.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.

Qualification/Training Requirements:

  • Degree in music education or performance.
  • Teaching experience in classroom/group settings.
  • Willingness to learn about Waldorf education and incorporate Waldorf principles of child development into teaching.

Employment Details

Salary, Hours, and Benefits:

  • Hourly teaching and class performances range from $45.00 to $75.00 per hour, based on qualifications.
  • Parent conferences and student report writing at $30.00 per hour
  • Meeting attendance at $18.00 per hour
