WBALTV is shining the spotlight on the importance of environmental education in schools and the Waldorf School of Baltimore’s new partnership with John Newman Bees. Beekeeping will be a key component of the school’s nature program in the fall.
Kindergartners will learn basic information, like how bees make honey, while older students, such as fifth graders, will learn more of the science behind pollination. The school prepared for the bees by first planting a pollinator garden.
“We have pawpaw trees here, we have fig trees, cherry trees, and we’re getting other types of fruit trees. So, they will learn that the bees are actually the most important part of bringing fruit to those trees,” says teacher Lida Lawrence.
